HARRISON, N. Mark McGwire Jersey .J. -- With replacement referees handling the games, there was bound to be some controversy in Major League Soccer this season. It happened in Week 2. Vicente Sanchez scored on a penalty kick in the 72rd minute after a questionable decision by the substitute referee and the Colorado Rapids and new coach Pablo Mastroeni opened their season with a 1-1 tie with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. Substitute referee Alan Kelly awarded the penalty kick after defender Jamison Olave used his chest to knock a much smaller Marvin Chavez to the grass as he took a pass from Sanchez. "If its against you its a tough call," Mastroeni said. "If its for you, you are OK with it. I think referees are out of our control." The substitute referees are working the games because the Professional Referee Organization, which manages on-field officials for Major League Soccer, has locked out officials from the Professional Soccer Referees Association. The two sides have failed to reach agreement on a contract after the officials formed a union last year. Kelly told a pool reporter that Olave challenged Chavez from behind and initiated the contact, a decision that brought boos from the crowd of 20,542 at Red Bull Arena who earlier had thought that Thierry Henrys 57th-minute goal would be the winner. "I dont mean to be blunt, but in terms of the questions thats the straight forward answers I can give," Kelly said. Red Bulls coach Mike Petke didnt like the decision but he wasnt going to draw a fine from the league by criticizing it. "Listen, its the game," Petke said. "I mean what am I going to say about the penalty kick? Perhaps if the guy was Olaves size he would not have gone down like that. I dont know? Olave looked to step up and stand his ground and keep him in front of him and got him. The referee made a decision. Its unfortunate for us, fortunate for Colorado. You get away from it, move on from it." The 6-foot-3 and 210-pound Olave, who seemed shocked by the call, left the locker room and was not available for comment. Sanchez deposited the kick from the spot into the right corner of the net. Red Bulls keeper Luis Robles did not have a chance to stop it. "I spoke to the ref afterward and he said, He was too physical coming from behind him," Robles said. "I have to respect that." The Red Bulls, the defending Supporters Shield trophy winners, were trying to bounce back from a dismal season-opening performance in 4-1 loss at Vancouver last weekend. Henry, who did not play in the season opener because it was on an artificial surface, headed a brilliant crossing pass by Lloyd Sam under rookie goalkeeper John Berner. It was his 42nd goal for the Red Bulls, second on the career list behind Juan Pablo Angel (58). "There is no panic," Henry said about the slow start. "We have to go back to the film this week and do better because it obviously was not enough to win the game today." He had no comment on the referees decision. New York had two chances to win in the five minutes of injury time. Eric Alexander was wide with a shot in the box and Berner, who played last season at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, made a diving save on another header by Henry. "To say I wasnt on the edge of my seat of out, if not out of it, would be an understatement," said Mastroeni, who played 11-plus seasons with the Rapids and returned after last season with several club records, including most games played. "Thats the beauty of the game. It can all come down to the last minute, the last second, thats why its exciting." Robles had kept the Red Bulls in the game in the first half, making five saves, including a finger-tip stop on a 35-yard shot by Nick LaBrocca that caught the goalkeeper a little too far off his line. Mastroeni was named the Rapids head coach last week, replacing Oscar Pareja, who left in January to take the same job with his former club, FC Dallas. Mastroeni was in charge of the squad through the preseason. Walt Weiss Jersey . Coverage on TSN is underway now while action resumes on TSN2 at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. "Its embarrassing what were doing here," leading scorer Phil Kessel said Wednesday. The most recent failed season came with even more pain than the six that preceded it. There was no hint of an impending implosion when the Leafs came roaring out of the all-star break with back-to-back games against Pittsburgh -- a 5-4 shootout loss followed by a 1-0 win the next night.SAN FRANCISCO -- Adam Wainwright will take the win and run. On a night he managed only a season low for strikeouts, the St. Louis right-hander still found ways to dominate. Wainwright allowed four hits over 7 2-3 innings, Matt Carpenter continued to feast on San Francisco pitching, and the Cardinals ended a scoring drought, beating the Giants 2-0 Wednesday night. "To come away with a way on a night I walked the pitcher, Ill run out of here," Wainwright said. "That was a big win for us." Carpenter had three hits and drove in a run, improving to .520 (26 for 50) against the Giants to help the Cardinals end a three-game losing streak. Matt Holliday added two hits and an RBI. "I dont think there is any rhyme or reason to it," Carpenter said. "I stay with the same approach and just try to help the team." Wainwright (11-4) took over the NL lead in ERA (1.89) and wins. He walked two and struck out one and his infielders combined to record 18 outs. "I was aware of that," Wainwright said. "Im getting outs, so why change? When you start thinking about strikeouts, then you start going deeper into counts. Guys were making great plays and laying out left and right." The closest the Giants came to scoring was in the eighth, when Tyler Colvin sent a drive to the wall in centre field and defensive replacement Peter Bourjos hauled it in. Joe Panik, who had two hits, was the lone Giant to venture past first base, reaching third with two outs in the sixth and again with two outs in the eighth. Ryan Vogelsong (5-5) gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight. Vogelsong lost his second straight start despite a 2.08 ERA with a walk and 15 strikeouts over that span. "He had all his pitches going, good tempo out there," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "For him to give up two runs, seven innings, thats a great job." The Cardinals ended a 26-inning scoreless streak by scoring twice in the thiird. Ryon Healy Jersey. Oscar Tavares doubled and Mark Ellis singled. After a strikeout, Carpenter and Holliday each singled in runs. Carpenter has hit safely in 14 of his 16 games against the Giants, including the last 10 10. "Were still trying to figure out a way to score runs," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Those were big RBIs there. It lets Wainwright do what he does. Its no secret hes the guy we want on the mound." Vogelsong retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, allowing one hit the rest of his outing. "It doesnt matter, its a loss," Vogelsong said. "Im tired of talking about stuff. Its all about wins and losses now and getting to the playoffs. It doesnt matter what the stuff is. Its about getting wins." Wainwright faced just two over the minimum until Panik singled with two outs in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Hector Sanchez also singled and Pat Neshek came on to get Gregor Blanco to pop out. Trevor Rosenthal got the final three outs for his 25th save in 28 chances after giving up an infield hit to Hunter Pence to start the ninth. Pence was originally ruled out, but the call was reversed following a review. NOTES: Tavares made his first MLB appearance in CF. ...
